Gómez 'at home' against Getafe
After having missed the game against Elche due to a knock to his knee, Maxi Gómez is set for a return to action against Getafe this Sunday. The striker will attempt add to his goal haul for the season against a familiar foe, who have more than enough reason to fear the Uruguayan’s scoring ability.
Last year at Mestalla he grabbed a brace against ‘Los Azulones,’ courtesy of a scissor kick shot and a perfect header that brought the crowd to their feet.
Gómez’ success against Getafe began when he first came to Spain. Starting with his spell at Celta Vigo, he has scored every time he has been on the home side against Pepe Bordalas’ men, with an impressive total of 4 games and 3 goals.
Former Valencia CF player, Gonzalo De Los Santos, said of his fellow Uruguayan: “He had a great game last year against Getafe, who are a very tough team. They have Uruguayan DNA, and Maxi will have two centre backs pushing him a lot. Getafe reduce space well, so his individual talent will have to show through.”
"This season he will repeat his scoring stats from last year -and improve on them,” continued De Los Santos.
“I believe that there are few finishers in Spain who are as effective as Maxi Gómez. He is a born finisher and his arrival in Europe has given him the opportunity to grow even more in this regard. Maxi has the physique of a target man, but has individual quality that allows him to drop back and look the ball, combining with his teammates. He has that gift of being able to play one-twos or passing in triangles, but what he likes is to be involved in the action.”
Gómez has three goals to his name already this season, and Getafe will be fearing that he marks his return with another.
